Ma - With English Translation

Mout Ki Aaghosh Main Jab Thak Ke Soo Jati Hai
When, exhausted, a mother finally falls asleep in the embrace of death,

Tab Kaheen Ja Kar 'Raza' Thora Sukoon Pati Hai Maa
Only then, O Raza, does a mother finally find a little peace.

Fikr Main Bachoon Ki Kuch Is Terha Ghul Jati Hai Maa
A mother becomes so completely consumed by worries for her children,

Nojawaan Hotay Huwe Boodhi Nazar Aati Hai Maa
That she appears old even while she is still young.

Rooh Ke Rishtay Ki Yeh Gehrayiyan To Dekhiye
Behold the depth of the bond between souls:

Chot Lagti Hai Humaray Aur Chillati Hai Maa
It is we who are hurt, yet it is our mother who cries out in pain.

Oadhti Hai Hasraton Ka Khud To Bosida Kafan
She wraps herself in the worn-out shroud of her own unfulfilled dreams,

Chahaton Ka Pairahan Bachon Ko Pehnati Hai Maa
While clothing her children in garments woven from her love.

Ek Ek Hasrat Ko Apne Azm-o-Istiqlal Se
With unwavering resolve and steadfast determination, she buries each of her own desires,

Aansuon Se Ghusl De Kar Khud Hi Dafnati Hai Maa
Washing them with her tears before laying them to rest herself.

Bhooka Rehne Hi Nahin Deti Yateemon Ko Kabhi
She never allows an orphan to remain hungry,

Jane Kis Kis Se Kahan Se Maang Kar Lati Hai Maa
Who knows from whom, or from where, she gathers enough to feed them.

Haddiyon Ka Ras Pila Kar Apne Dil Ke Chain Ko
She nourishes the comfort of her heart—her child—with the very marrow of her bones,

Kitni Hi Raaton Mein Khali Pait Soo Jati Hai Maa
While she herself goes to sleep hungry on countless nights.

Jane Kitni Barf Si Raaton Mein Aisa Bhi Hua
Many freezing nights have passed when this too has happened:

Bacha To Chaati Pe Hai, Geelay Mein Soo Jati Hai Maa
She keeps her child warm against her chest while she herself sleeps upon the damp ground.

Jab Khilone Ko Machalta Hai Koi Ghurbat Ka Phool
When a poor child longs for a toy,

Aansuon Ke Saaz Par Bachay Ko Behlati Hai Maa
A mother soothes the child with melodies played upon her tears.

Fikr Ke Shamshaan Mein Aakhir Chitaon Ki Tarah
In the graveyard of endless worries,

Jaise Sookhi Lakdiyan Is Tarah Jal Jati Hai Maa
A mother burns away like dry wood upon a funeral pyre.

Bhook Se Majboor Ho Kar Mehmaan Ke Samne
When poverty leaves her helpless before guests,

Maangte Bachche Jab Roti To Sharmati Hai Maa
And her children ask for bread, a mother lowers her eyes in shame.

Zindagi Ki Siskiyan Sun Kar Hosh-e-Shahr Se
Hearing the sighs of life amid the indifference of society,

Bhooke Bachchon Ki Ghiza Apna Kafan Lati Hai Maa
A mother is ready to sacrifice even her own shroud to feed her hungry children.

Muflisi Bache Ki Zid Par Jab Utha Leti Hai Haath
When poverty forces her to raise a hand against her stubborn child,

Jaise Ho Mujrim Koi Is Tarah Sharmati Hai Maa
She feels ashamed, as though she herself were the guilty one.

Apne Aanchal Se Gulabi Aansuon Ko Poonch Kar
Wiping her rosy tears with the edge of her veil,

Dair Tak Ghurbat Pe Apne Ashk Barsati Hai Maa
She weeps for a long time over the hardships of poverty.

Samne Bachon Ke Khush Rehti Hai Har Ik Haal Mein
Before her children, she remains cheerful no matter the circumstances,

Raat Ko Chup Chup Ke Lekin Ashk Barsati Hai Maa
But at night, in secret, she quietly sheds her tears.

Kab Zarurat Ho Meri Bachay Ko Itna Soch Kar
Wondering when her child might need her,

Jaagti Rehti Hain Aankhen Aur Soo Jati Hai Maa
Her eyes stay awake, even as her body falls asleep.

Pehle Bachon Ko Khilati Hai Sukoon-o-Chain Se
She first feeds her children with complete peace of mind,

Baad Mein Jo Kuch Bacha Ho Shauq Se Khati Hai Maa
And only afterward eats whatever little remains, contentedly.

Maangti Hi Kuch Nahin Apne Liye Allah Se
She asks nothing from Allah for herself,

Apne Bachon Ke Liye Daman Ko Phailati Hai Maa
But stretches out her hands in prayer for her children.

De Ek Bimaar Bachche Ko Duaen Aur Dawa
After giving her sick child both medicine and heartfelt prayers,

Pait Hi Rakh Kar Sar Kadmon Pe Soo Jati Hai Maa
She rests at the child's feet and falls asleep there.

Jane Anjane Mein Ho Jaye Jo Bachon Se Khusoor
If, knowingly or unknowingly, her children make a mistake,

Ek Anjaani Sazaa Ke Dar Se Thartharati Hai Maa
A mother trembles with fear of some unseen punishment that might befall them.

Gar Jawan Beti Ho Ghar Mein Aur Koi Rishta Na Ho
If a grown daughter remains at home without a suitable proposal,

Ek Naye Ehsaas Ki Sooli Pe Charh Jati Hai Maa
A mother is lifted onto a new cross of anxiety and sorrow.

Har Ibadat, Har Mohabbat Mein Nihaan Hai Ek Gharaz
Almost every act of worship and every expression of love carries some personal motive,

Be-Gharaz, Be-Laus Har Khidmat Ko Kar Jati Hai Maa
But a mother's service is selfless, sincere, and free of all selfishness.

Apne Bachon Ki Bahaar-e-Zindagi Ke Waste
For the springtime of her children's lives,

Aansuon Ke Phool Har Mausam Mein Barsati Hai Maa
She showers flowers of tears in every season.

Zindagi Bhar Beenti Hai Khaar Raah-e-Zeest Se
All her life she gathers the thorns from the path of living,

Jate Jate Naimat-e-Firdous De Jati Hai Maa
And when she departs this world, she leaves behind the blessings of Paradise.

Bazuon Mein Khinch Ke Aa Jayegi Jaise Kainaat
It is as though she could gather the whole universe into her arms,

Apne Bachay Ke Liye Bahon Ko Phailati Hai Maa
Whenever she opens them to embrace her child.

Ek Ek Hamle Se Bachche Ko Bachane Ke Liye
To shield her child from every danger and every attack,

Dhaal Banti Hai, Kabhi Talwar Ban Jati Hai Maa
A mother becomes a shield—and, when needed, a sword.

Zindagani Ke Safar Mein Gardishon Ki Dhoop Mein
In life's journey, beneath the scorching sun of hardship,

Jab Koi Saya Nahin Milta To Yaad Aati Hai Maa
When no shade can be found, it is Mother who comes to mind.

Pyar Kehte Hain Kise Aur Mamta Kya Cheez Hai
What is love, and what is a mother's tenderness?

Koi Un Bachon Se Poochhe Jin Ki Mar Jati Hai Maa
Ask those children whose mother has passed away.

Pehle Dil Ko Saaf Karke Khoob Apne Khoon Se
First she purifies the heart with the very essence of her own blood,

Dharkanon Pe Kalma-e-Tawheed Likh Jati Hai Maa
Then she inscribes the declaration of God's Oneness upon its every heartbeat.

Safha-e-Hasti Pe Likhti Hai Usool-e-Zindagi
Upon the pages of existence she writes the principles of life,

Is Liye Ek Maktab-e-Islam Kehlati Hai Maa
Which is why a mother is called the first school of Islam.

Us Nayi Duniya Ko Diye Masoom Rahbar Is Liye
She gives the world its innocent guides and leaders,

Azmaton Mein Sani-e-Quran Kehlati Hai Maa
Therefore, in her greatness, a mother is likened to the Qur'an's noble teachings.

Ghar Se Jab Pardes Jata Hai Koi Noor-e-Nazar
When the light of her eyes leaves home for a distant land,

Haath Mein Qur'an Le Kar Dar Pe Aa Jati Hai Maa
A mother comes to the doorway holding the Holy Qur'an.

De Ke Bachay Ko Zamanat Mein Raza-e-Pak Ki
Entrusting her child to the pure protection and will of God,

Peechay Peechay Sar Jhukaye Door Tak Jati Hai Maa
She walks behind, head bowed, watching until the child disappears from sight.

Kanpti Aawaz Se Kehti Hai, "Beta, Alvida."
In a trembling voice she whispers, "Farewell, my son."

Samne Jab Tak Rahe Hathon Ko Lehrati Hai Maa
As long as she can still see him, she continues waving her hands.

Risne Lagta Hai Purane Zakhm Se Taza Lahoo
Old wounds begin to bleed afresh,

Hasraton Ki Bolti Tasveer Ban Jati Hai Maa
And a mother becomes the living portrait of unfulfilled longing.

Jab Pareshani Mein Ghir Jate Hain Hum Pardes Mein
When we are surrounded by troubles in a foreign land,

Aansuon Ko Poonchhne Khwabon Mein Aa Jati Hai Maa
Mother comes into our dreams to wipe away our tears.

Laut Ke Wapas Safar Se Jab Bhi Ghar Aate Hain Hum
Whenever we return home from a journey,

Daal Kar Bahen Gale Mein Sar Ko Sehlati Hai Maa
She throws her arms around our neck and gently strokes our head.

Aisa Lagta Hai Ke Jaise Aa Gaye Firdous Mein
It feels as though we have entered Paradise,

Bhinch Kar Bahon Mein Jab Seene Se Liptati Hai Maa
When a mother holds us tightly against her heart.

Dair Ho Jati Hai Ghar Aane Mein Aksar Jab Hamein
Whenever we are late returning home,

Rait Par Machhli Ho Jaise Aise Ghabrati Hai Maa
A mother grows restless like a fish stranded upon the sand.

Marte Dam Bacha Na Aapaya Agar Pardes Se
If her child cannot return from a foreign land before her final breath,

Apni Donon Putliyan Chaukhat Pe Rakh Jati Hai Maa
It is as though a mother leaves both her eyes fixed upon the doorway, forever waiting.

Baad Mar Jane Ke Phir Bete Ki Khidmat Ke Liye
Even after death, to continue caring for her son,

Bhes Beti Ka Badal Kar Ghar Mein Aa Jati Hai Maa
She returns to the home in the guise of a daughter.

Hum Balaon Mein Kahin Ghirte Hain To Be-Ikhtiyar
Whenever we are surrounded by hardship, without even realizing it,

Khair Ho Bachche Ki Keh Kar Dar Pe Aa Jati Hai Maa
A mother appears at God's door, praying, "May my child remain safe."

Door Ho Jata Hai Jab Aankhon Se Godi Ka Pala
When the child once cradled in her lap goes far beyond her sight,

Dil Ko Hathon Se Pakar Kar Ghar Ko Aa Jati Hai Maa
She holds her aching heart together and slowly returns home.

Doosre Hi Din Se Rehti Hai Khatoon Ki Muntazir
From the very next day she begins waiting for a letter,

Dar Pe Aahat Ho Hawa Se Bhi To Aa Jati Hai Maa
Even the sound of the wind at the door makes her hurry to answer it.

Chahe Hum Khushiyon Mein Maa Ko Bhool Jayen Dosto
Friends, we may forget our mother during times of happiness,

Jab Musibat Sar Pe Aati Hai To Yaad Aati Hai Maa
But when hardship falls upon us, it is Mother we remember.

Door Ho Jati Hai Sari Umr Ki Us Dum Thakan
The weariness of an entire lifetime disappears in an instant,

Biyah Kar Bete Ka Jab Ghar Bahu Lati Hai Maa
When a mother brings home a bride for her son.

Cheen Leti Hai Wohi Aksar Sukoon-e-Zindagi
Yet often, the very one she lovingly welcomes into the house

Pyar Se Dulhan Bana Kar Jis Ko Ghar Lati Hai Maa
Becomes the cause of taking away the peace of her later years.

Phair Letay Hain Nazar Jis Waqt Beta Aur Bahu
When both son and daughter-in-law begin to turn their faces away from her,

Ajnabi Apne Hi Ghar Mein Ban Jati Hai Maa
A mother becomes a stranger within her own home.

Humne Ye Bhi To Nahin Socha Alag Hone Ke Baad
We seldom stop to think, after setting up our own separate homes,

Jab Diya Hi Kuch Nahin Hum Ne To Kya Khati Hai Maa
If we give her nothing, what does our mother have to eat?

Zabt To Dekho Ke Itni Berukhi Ke Bawajood
Look at her patience—even after so much neglect,

Bad-Dua Deti Hai Hargiz Aur Na Pashtati Hai Maa
She never curses her children, nor does she ever regret loving them.

Allah Allah Bhool Kar Ek Sitam Ko Raat Din
Again and again she forgets every hurt done to her,

Pote Poton Se Shikasta Dil Ko Behlati Hai Maa
Finding comfort for her broken heart in her grandchildren.

Beta Kitna Hi Bura Ho Par Parosan Ke Huzoor
No matter how wayward her son may be,

Rok Kar Jazbaat Ko Bete Ke Gun Gati Hai Maa
Before the neighbors she suppresses her feelings and speaks only of his virtues.

Shadiyan Kar Kar Ke Bachche Ja Base Pardes Mein
After marrying, her children settle far away in foreign lands,

Dil Khatooton Se Aur Tasveeron Se Behlati Hai Maa
And a mother consoles her lonely heart with letters and photographs.

Apne Seene Par Rakhe Hai Kainat-e-Zindagi
She carries the entire universe of life within her heart,

Ye Zameen Is Waste Ae Dost Kehlati Hai Maa
That is why, my friend, this earth itself is called "Mother."

Saal Bhar Mein Ya Kabhi Hafte Mein Jumeraat Ko
Perhaps once a year, or sometimes only on a Thursday,

Zindagi Bhar Ka Sila Ek Fateha Pati Hai Maa
The reward for a lifetime of sacrifice is a single prayer recited for her soul.

Gumrahi Ki Gard Jam Jaye Na Mere Chand Par
"May the dust of misguidance never settle upon my moon," she prays.

Barish-e-Iman Mein Yun Roz Nehlati Hai Maa
Each day she bathes her child in the rain of faith.

Apne Pehlu Mein Lita Kar Roz Toti Ki Tarah
Holding us close beside her, repeating patiently like a teacher with a child,

Ek Barah Panch Chaudah Hum Ko Ratwati Hai Maa
She lovingly teaches us our first lessons and prayers by heart.

Umr Bhar Ghafil Na Hona Matam-e-Shabbir Se
"Never become heedless of mourning for Shabbir," she teaches throughout life.

Raat Din Apne Amal Se Hum Ko Samjhati Hai Maa
Day and night, she teaches through the example of her own actions.

Martaba Maa Ka Ho Zahir Is Liye Firdous Se
So that the exalted rank of a mother might be made manifest from Paradise itself,

Apne Bachchon Ke Liye Poshaaq Mangwati Hai Maa
A mother seeks heavenly garments for the sake of her children.

Yaad Aata Hai Shab-e-Ashoor Ka Kamsin Jawan
One is reminded of the youthful hero of the Night of Ashura,

Jab Kabhi Uljhi Hui Zulfon Ko Suljhati Hai Maa
Whenever a mother gently untangles her child's hair.

Sab Se Pehle Jaan Dena Fatima Ke Laal Par
"Be the first to sacrifice your life for Fatimah's beloved son,"

Raat Bhar Aun-o-Muhammad Ko Ye Samjhati Hai Maa
All night long, a mother teaches this lesson to Aun and Muhammad.

Jab Talak Ye Haath Hai, Hamsheer Be-Parda Na Ho
"As long as these hands still have strength, your sister must never be left unprotected,"

Ek Bahadur, Bawafa Bete Se Farmati Hai Maa
So speaks a mother to her brave and loyal son.

Naujawan Beta Agar Dam Tor De Aaghosh Mein
If a young son breathes his last in his mother's embrace,

Zindagi Bhar Sar Ko Deewaron Se Takrati Hai Maa
The mother spends the rest of her life striking her head against the walls in grief.

Fatima Ke Laal Par Qurban Karne Ke Liye
To offer her son in sacrifice for Fatimah's beloved child,

Baandh Kar Sehra Jawan Bete Ko Leti Hai Maa
A mother adorns her young son like a bridegroom before sending him forth.

Khoon Mein Doobe Hue Aate Hain Jab Sehra Ke Phool
When those flowers of the desert return drenched in blood,

Ek Ek Tukre Ko Apne Dil Se Liptati Hai Maa
A mother gathers every fragment and presses it to her heart.

Laash-e-Qasim Par Kaha, Zinda Rahi To Aaoongi
"Qasim, if I remain alive, I shall return to you," she says beside his body.

Ab To Soo-e-Shaam Dulhan Ko Liye Jati Hai Maa
Now the mother leads the young bride toward the road to Sham.

Laash Par Bete Ki Padhti Hai Jawani Ka Marsiya
Over her son's body she recites an elegy for his youth,

Shukr Ka Sajda Is Aalam Mein Baja Lati Hai Maa
Yet even in such anguish, she bows in gratitude before God.

Allah Allah Ittihad-e-Sabr Laila-o-Husain
How wondrous is the shared patience of Layla and Husayn!

Baap Ne Khenchi Sina, Seene Ko Sehlati Hai Maa
As the father draws out the spear, the mother gently strokes her son's chest.

Ye Bata Sakti Hai Hum Ko Bas Rabab-e-Khasta-Tan
Only the grief-stricken Rabab can truly tell us,

Kis Tarah Bin Doodh Ke Bachche Ko Behlati Hai Maa
How a mother comforts her infant when she has no milk left to give.
